Today was the annual celebration of all things Asian held in Alton Baker Park here in Eugene–I initially participated in the celebration two years ago on July 27, 2024, the summer following the publication in August 2023 of the book, Two Faces, I co-authored with my dear friend Nina Wolpe.

On Sunday June 14 of this year our favorite eldest granddaughter Venice Takara Bailey graduated from Oregon State University Cascade Campus in Bend, Oregon with a degree in Arts Media Technology. The day previous the Arts Media program held an art showing of students’ art projects and Venice’s project was on display.

Today I made my annual trek up to Corvallis to visit my dear friend, Christine Gough and her third-grade class at Letitia Carson Elementary School. This continues a twenty-eight-year history of a visit around my telling of an American story, of one family of Japanese ancestry who experienced the forced evacuation from their home to imprisonment in a concentration camp in Colorado during World War II in a place called Camp Amache.

On Wednesday April 1st the Manor hosted a welcoming day for a large group of wait-listers for a prospective apartment. The objective was to share some of the activities and social benefits of living at Cascade Manor. An added sharing was a book reading by eight resident authors from the Manor–each author read a segment from one of their published books.
On Saturday, March 7th my family in Eugene and in Bend made the trek to the Japanese American Museum of Oregon in Portland for the special exhibit of the Ireicho Book Project. There we were scheduled to view the names of the Nagai family and those of my Uncle George Miyake’s family all of whom had been in the War Relocation Authority concentration camp, Camp Amache during World War II. The objective was to formally acknowledge each person with a stamp under their name who had been behind barbed wire during that time.
As a child back in the late 50’s I occasionally heard my mom say that we had a Samurai branch in our family tree. What that meant I didn’t understand, but it sounded cool. I didn’t hear it too often, and when I did, she couldn’t or wouldn’t elaborate on it. So, it was something cool, but mysterious and totally an unknown.
This week on the 10th I held a book reading here at Cascade Manor for my latest publication, Meanderings of a Bent Mind. It was set up as a lecture in the auditorium with some sixty chairs for the audience, and was set to tape on the in-house TV station. As with all my presentations I was anxious as the time drew near—I have always survived such anxiety, but every time I go through this nervousness.
